Q to drop
Remapped keybind, or trying to drop with empty hands.
Fix: Check Settings > Controls for the current Drop binding, and confirm you are holding a book first.
This page covers how to drop books in Clean the Library on PC, mobile, Xbox, and PlayStation. Pick your platform below for the exact key or button, and if the drop isn't working, pick what's happening for a targeted fix.

Four reasons a drop attempt can fail, checked in the order that catches the most cases.
Use the platform selector and the symptom dropdown in the widget above for a fix matched to what you're actually seeing, since "book won't drop" covers several different underlying causes depending on the platform.
What a drop does, and does not do, versus placing a book on its shelf.
Dropping is an instant, targetless action. Whatever book is on top of your carried stack falls to the ground at your current position. There is no aiming and no minimum distance to a shelf, which is different from placing a book, where the game checks whether you are standing at the correct shelf code before it counts.
As of a June 2026 update, yes. Books left on the floor persist between sessions instead of resetting when you rejoin a server. That is convenient if you get pulled away mid-run, but it has a real downside: dumping a mixed pile without sorting it first can leave clutter that carries into your next session and makes the floor harder to read at a glance.
The two common reasons are freeing a hand for a different book you want to prioritize, and setting a book down near its shelf so a squadmate can grab it if your own hands are full. Neither of those requires precision, since the game does not care where a dropped book lands, only where a shelved one lands.

B to drop
An open menu or prompt eats the B press before it reaches the drop action.
Fix: Back out of any menu first, then press B once with a book in hand.
Circle to drop
Same menu-overlap issue as Xbox, Circle backs out of prompts first.
Fix: Close any open prompt, then press Circle once with a book in hand.
Tap the on-screen Drop button
Button never appears, usually because the camera is still moving or nothing is held.
Fix: Stop moving the camera, confirm a book is in hand, then tap near the carry icon.
Two separate actions that use different buttons and have different consequences.
Dropping releases a book anywhere, instantly, with no scoring effect either way. Shelving is the action that counts: it requires walking the book to its matching shelf code, and getting it wrong resets your combo. If you are not sure which shelf a book belongs on, dropping it and checking the book location finder before picking it back up is lower risk than guessing at a shelf and breaking a combo you have been building.
For the full picture of what happens after a book is correctly shelved, including how shelf codes and spine colors work together, the book locations guide and the beginner walkthrough both build on the same core loop this page covers.

This site separates confirmed public-source mappings from values that still need an in-game pass. Floor 1 sections 1A-1J and Floor 2 sections 2A-2G are listed with their current known categories. Unconfirmed shelves stay marked as TBD / verify so players do not memorize invented data.
Before publishing a new shelf mapping, we compare the book code, the shelf label, and the spine-color cue in a live Clean The Library server. Codes and likes are rechecked daily because Roblox games can patch reward systems without notice.
Press Q on PC, B on Xbox, Circle on PlayStation, or tap the on-screen Drop button on mobile. The book you are holding lands wherever your character is standing, it does not need to be near a shelf.
The most common cause is trying to drop with empty hands, the action is silent when you are not holding anything. After that, check your keybind hasn't been remapped on PC, or that no menu is open on controller, since B and Circle also back out of prompts.
No, not on its own. A June 2026 update made floor drops persistent, meaning a book you drop and leave on the floor stays there between sessions instead of resetting when you rejoin. The downside is that a messy pile of dropped books can carry over into your next run if you don't clean it up.
Dropping just releases the book wherever you stand, it's an instant action with no target. Shelving requires carrying the book to its matching shelf code and placing it there, which is the action that actually counts toward round completion and your combo.
A floor drop by itself does not reset the combo. What resets it is placing a book on the wrong shelf, or leaving too long a gap between placements. Dropping a book you're unsure about and re-checking the shelf code before shelving it is safer than guessing.
Tap the book to pick it up, then tap the Drop button that appears near the carry icon once you're holding something. The button is contextual, it only shows while you are standing roughly still with a book in hand.
That is usually a short rendering delay rather than a failed drop. Walk a few steps and check again. If it is still attached, picking the book back up and dropping it a second time resets the hold state.
